The Practice of God's Presence

I’m finding it easier these days to put a book down, to close my laptop, and to bring myself to the feet of Jesus. It hasn’t always been this way.

Time with God was only for those 15 min. in the morning or before bed. You know when I would have my “devotions”. I met with God on my terms. He could see me during Sunday worship, my morning devotions, and maybe in the car when I was especially touched by a worship song.

In the last few years God has mercifully helped me see more of myself {my broken, prideful, and selfish self} and softened my heart to see the gaps that only he can fill. I knew they were there before, but something has changed. My desire for God to fill them has increased. I have a new yearning for him and can more easily recognize when I need to lay it all before him and seek Him. Even if it’s 3:00 on Thursday instead of Sunday morning.

One thing I’ve found is that the more I routinely call on him and read his Word, the more I desire it. I begin to realize how his truths fuel me. My eyes are opened to what I am without him.

In those days of my children’s infancy I would often read “sleep begets sleep”. Meaning when babies are well rested they will then sleep better. Not sure that my daughter ever got the memo. Anyhow, this reminds me of our time with God.

The more we get into the practice of meeting with him, the more we desire it. This isn’t easy at first. At first it feels like a chore to give God more of our time. With practice though, we transition to looking for places we could squeeze in more time to rest in his presence.

There are still days when I don’t even crack open the Bible, but when those days happen I feel the longing for it more. I truly believe if we ask God for a desire for his Word, he will give it. It doesn’t happen over night, but with each day, each prayer, it grows.

Recently Angela Thomas shared 5 Bible Study Tips for Busy Moms.  These are great steps to begin making God our habit!

“Oh God, you are my God, earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you, my body longs for you, in a dry and weary land where there is no water.” Psalm 63:1

Are you in the habit of giving God time to work in you? What helps you carve out time to meet with him?
